Frequently asked questions - Volunteers

How can I help?

The actual performance is merely part of a production.  Prior to this, people just like you have been working for several weeks to get to opening night.  Building sets, making or sourcing costumes and props, painting, installing lights, creating marketing graphics and the playbill, photography, setting up audience seating, display windows, concessions, box office, sound and light booth operators - it's a long list, and it's where most of the fun happens. There's a reason all theatre companies include couples who met working on a show.  We are an all-volunteer organization and there are countless opportunities to join the fun.

What day and time?

Like many volunteer organizations, our work begins after our "day jobs."  Rarely will we schedule anything on a weekday.  Most rehearsing, set construction and other activities take place weekday evenings and weekends.

What skills?

Skills in painting, sewing, power tools and construction, lighting and sound are always valued, but if you have no specific skill, we'll show you what to do, because someone showed us once, and soon enough you'll find your niche and a new group of friends. We're particularly fond of our friends who have trucks.

Where?

Set building takes place at Arlington County's enormous professionally-staffed scene shop, located in the Gunston Community Center complex.  Multiple sets can be built simultaneously, and you'll run into techies and volunteers from many of the arts organizations supported by Arlington County.

If you're helping us onstage or backstage, we're usually at Gunston Theatre Two, though we occasionally perform at Theatre on the Run, on South Four Mile Drive.

Auditions and rehearsals take place at the same building that houses Theatre on the Run, where the county offers rehearsal spaces, dance studios, and meeting rooms.

These buildings are all within a few minutes' drive of each other.  The closest Metro (though not walkable) is Pentagon City.
